$150 bike camper: DIY micro mobile home (downloadable plans)

Paul Elkins fell for micro-camping in 2002 when he toured the country in his cabover “stealth camper”. Sure he could make something more affordable, this year he began building a nomadic micro-shelter based on the Airstream design. [Downloadable plans: ]

Using 4 recycled fluted-plastic campaign signs from a recent election, a $20 secondhand bike, 6 pine boards ($1 at Home Depot), screws, Duct tape and zip ties, he built his latest micro mobile shelter for only $150.

Calling it a “micro Airstream bike camper”, it’s a 60-pound “home away from home”, complete with butane stove, bread-pan sink, counter, food storage shelving, clothes-storage bins, LED lighting, bed, windows, pee jug, bubble insulation, stereo with MP3 player, and a skylight made out of a 1 gallon plastic tub.

Looks more stupid now than a year ago. Get a woman and see how it holds up to fooling around. I would shake it to pcs. Get a pop up

What do you do when you come across a wild animal that can out ride your bike. You are going to be so done.

Paul, hi, nice work. I saw something very simiilar manufactured in Michigan. The man who had it was towing it with his motorcycle. It was about 1 ft narrower than yours and somewhat taller. It had a little side door near the back, and enough room to sleep very well and some storage space by the door for clothing and camp eqipment. He was camping all over the southwest US during the winter months in campgrounds.

This mixed with an electric bike or bike with e motor to help assisted peddle plus a solor panel to charge while you ride would be the perfect set up to travel around on imo

This is really awesome I was wondering though if you got a flat tire on the rear of the camper how difficult is it to remove the tires for repair

You'd probably have to stick to side streets. I can't see you going down main streets with that. Too much traffic. In NW indiana, they made a long bike trail from an old/unused rail way, which goes through quite a few communities. That would be ideal for that bike camper. Other than that, I can't see anyone using one of those outside a rural area.

Ironic how the very medium bearing the names of those most responsible for today's rampant homelessness served as the medium for the mobile micro shelter.

The real advantage of this is the weight, as an emergency bug out home it might take some convincing to some people, that just having a bike trailer would be an advantage for some and then to stock that with food and a tent and the camp stove,, the advantage here is that it's all combined into one,, but the disadvantage is it's only for 1 person.

I think it's brilliant, and then build one for the kids each, because at most times no one lives a hermits life,, where the wife and kids,, should be something that could be asked,, peddling their own ?

Pretty awesome. Ive always dreamt of traveling the states by bike or walking. This is a great cost effective idea of combining both. I may have to save this and maybe one day try it.

Nice very nice , remember the internet is for learning and not that other evil crap. I would also buy one, since I can't really drive and when I take my bike to the park, I have no shelter or anything to keep warm so this is very smart and convenient.

I'm wondering how to use coroplast over arched pvc pipe to make a light weight "camper" in the back of my Ford Ranger pickup… I built an earth bag dome a few years ago and also converted a pole shed into a micro house. Any ideas? Blessings.
