A Walk in the Rain Step by Step Acrylic Painting on Canvas for Beginners

In this video, we’re gonna get together and paint a lady with a red umbrella walking through a rainy city street.

This is a good lesson for beginners and up.

I’m painting on a 16×20 inch canvas, but you can paint on any type and size of canvas you like.

The brushes I use are:
• A 1-inch flat brush
• A wide palette knife
• A narrow, pointed palette knife

I’m using Liquitex Basics acrylic paints in the following colors:
• Mars Black
• Titanium White
• Cadmium Red Deep Hue
• Naphthol Crimson

If you are a beginner, buy lots of black and white paint; I always run out. I can also confirm this is indeed for beginners. If it wasn't I would've never been able to do it! I didn't have a knife yet so I used a small round brush for the Girl and a credit card for the water lines and buildings.

I started out hating this "painting with the palette knife" thing …. and yes, I'm a bit of a control freak, so that all made sense about halfway through the painting when Jane mentioned giving up control to the palette knife lol. Anyway — I stuck with it throughout this painting and I can see that the palette knife and I may become friends after all. We just need to hang out some more and get to know each other. Thanks for a fun painting and this painting turned out so much better than I ever hoped it would be.

Oh Jane this painting turned out great. This was my 1st painting and I certainly intend to do more. What is the best way to start. The only products I have were for painting this art piece. There are so many more I’d love to paint but feel overwhelmed with all the supplies. Is it better to purchase individual paints and brushes as needed? Also my son is requesting a painting of a skull. The pic he showed me was white background and black outline with fancy art work for the skull.

Tried a paint sketch on canvas paper, had trouble with the buildings and the reflections (hah that's 90% of it), because canvas paper's wrinkling, I did it small, and used a filbert for the girl since I'm sketching on a fourth of a full sheet, but got the hang of it to try it out on a canvas panel. Thanks, pretty simple and rewarding, just what I was looking for!
