Barcelona’s dark flat gets brighter using kaleidoscopic core

When Mike Davies of Studio P10 purchased a small flat in Barcelona’s Sant Antoni neighborhood it was filled with tiny, dark rooms. With the help of Miguel Angel Borràs and Elodie Grammont of Miel Arquitectos, he tore down walls and created a mirrored cube in the center of the flat to act as a kaleidoscope of light.

The kitchen and bathrooms form the center of the cube; their mirrored walls reflect the light, and images from the street trees and neighboring buildings. In the outer ring of the apartment is a bedroom, a living room, and a dining room/guest room with a seal-off curtain and sliding doors to create a private bedroom nook when necessary.

Like most of the work from Miel Arquitectos, there is a sense of play that runs throughout the project. “Piso Parlament 19 deepens our conviction that surprise is the best tool to rediscover the everyday,” explain the architects on their website, “where a closet (let’s say of Narnia) waits at the end of the room with a whole universe inside.”

I like the idea but I don't think I would get annoyed seeing myself so much because of all the freaking mirrors.

My first thought was claustrophobic? Surprised even myself because I don't know what the actual dimensions are. I like a mirror here & there but just knowing this is all mirror kinda made me ill (?). OMG – what about power outage or earthquake??? Well, guess I won't be getting invite! Lol.

Definitely not for me. The mirrors seem nauseating. The energy is confused. Urine colors in bathroom is never, ever a sound idea. A kitchen without windows for proper ventilation is just asking for nasty smells permitted into the paint, walls, building in general. Creating unnecessary mold spores. Imagine the time, energy, and effort necessary to clean this mirrored mess? Floor to ceiling splatters and dust show up everywhere. Maid service should be included for a apartment like this unless you rent to OCD residents okay w/ daily, hourly cleaning projects.

Not usually fond of many mirrors, but the use of them in this apartment is quite nice; it's incredible to see how the mirrors play a role beyond the usual "how do I look?" role. They capture the light nicely and maximize the space and the furniture like I've never seen before. The furniture is beautiful and the storage is a dream. I also really liked the doors/cupboards opening into the bathrooms. I thought the kitchen and the loo were designed quite nicely and creatively.

I absolutely love this! That being said, I wish you would've done a slow room by room walk through, instead of just a quick shot of different angles in different rooms, it was hard to get a decent perspective of what was where, with all the mirrors. I wonder if the homeowners walked into mirrors, before figuring out what was where.

How do you keep finding these cool places?! With all your video's you've done you must be working harder to find new one's. But Thank You, because I love seeing these places. I'd like to know costs too, if that's possible. How much to do the remodel? How much is he selling it or renting it out for?

Clever concept. You could really apply mirror effects tastefully to open up a space. I love that this guy took so much interest in every corner and space…..however its too many mirrors. Its almost confusing.

It's a cliche, but adding mirrors to a small space always makes a huge difference. I don't think it comes across as well on video as it would do if you were there.

With some of these apartments, and this one in particular, a floor-plan would be helpful.

Not my cup of tea …not sure what to make of it! 'The box' somewhat distracted me ….no touches of Barcelona at all…Each to their own , I guess. I don't mind dark rooms ..there's a different energy I enjoy with darker areas.

A bit confusing. I thought he was talking about how he set up the mirrors so that you could see the street of Barcelona from all over the flat, but I could only see it from one room. So he did not angle it like a periscope to get the image where he wanted? Also, in 480p it's hard to tell the difference between mirror and not mirror. While a "house of mirrors" effect is nifty and all, I'm trying to figure out what he did so I can decide if I want to replicate it. It would be easier if he got the mirrors dirty or put bits of colored tape on them or something so I could distinguish between mirror and not mirror better.

Kirsten, If you ever get a chance, you should visit some deployed military, particularly on ships in the Navy. How they make something out of nothing will blow your mind. I think all these tiny houses/apartments/etc., are awesome. But it's not new, or an unbelievable evolution of living environments. It's all been done for a great amount of time by people who've had very little resources.

I love your videos Kirsten ! Please would you start including Price and Floorplans ? That would help… price of reno and price it is selling at/worth if it were to be sold, and rent if any. Floorplans so we can replicate it or just understand it better! Many hugs to you and your family, and thanks again! From Alicia Manolas, Western Australia. Ps… if you come to Australia please go to a place called Coober Pedy and film a few "dugouts" as they are called, a type of tiny home underground as the surface temperature is too hot for living on with a house like normal!!!!

I understand why he used gold/yellow, but not a fan of the color.  I really like the design, but I don't think I have any idea how big it is or how it's laid out because the cameras were all over the place.

I don't understand why it is SO expensive to own/rent a house/apartment in Spain since it is a Country that has many serious problems (energy, GDP, unemployment, Education, politicians…) and can't seem to find a way out of them.
