Dan Price’s underground home, art & philosophy on $5,000/year

When Dan Price returned to his home state of Oregon in 1990 he was determined to avoid mortgages or rent (he and his family had just finished caretaking a mansion with a heating bill of $500/month). He found an unused meadow in Joseph, Oregon and began renting it from his neighbors for $100/year (in exchange for cleaning downed trees and repairing fences).

His first underground structure was actually built to shelter his home/office, namely his copy machine, essential for publishing his zine “Moonlight Chronicles” which he started in 1992 (it was sponsored by Simple Shoes for a decade).

In his meadow paradise, Price now also has an underground “hobbit hole” style home, as well as, a composting toilet, a propane-powered shower (using river water) and a pine wood propane sauna. He’s not hooked up to city water (he discovered a spring on the property), but he’s hooked up to the grid and it’s been approved by the county and city.

I love all of your videos, yet this is one of my favorites. What a treasured life he lives. I appreciate his philosophical way of viewing life and his consideration for nature. I also like how he doesn't seem to choose his lifestyle because he's so presumptuous as to believe that man's footprint on the earth is so destructive and evil, yet rather that producing a larger footprint keeps you from connecting with your own, inner peace and the serenity of nature.

Not everyone can live that – especially if they have problems that are not suitable for living in a situation like that.

Its costs more than gas/petrol to keep your car on the road. You also have gov fees, car maintenance and insurance to keep your car on the road.

I've lived like this for 40 years, I don't own anything apart from my tent, a change of clothes and a few photos of a long lost love. I'm 64 now with no living relatives, it's been lonely.

Well , never knock another person way of life and I understand his reasoning. My dream as a kid is to have a mansion , since I came from poverty and poor country. I enjoy making money and helping other people succeed on the way.I bought historic school from 1910 that is 5600 sq ft with 12 ft ceilings on 7 1/2 acres made of rock and brick.I'm slowly restoring it and molding it to my mansion I always dream about. What is your dream? Don't follow trends like you should move into a "tiny" house build on top of trailer just because you got brainwashed and told by somebody that this is the "sustainable" way to live.My heating bill could be for example $1000 a mount and that would be OK and "sustainable " as long as I earn this money in 2-4 hours. What I'm saying here and what this man is saying is follow your own dream, don't get boxed into trends and influenced by others and told what to do.

Kirsten Dirksen, I love your videos. All of them are just spectacular. Where do you find these people? But, listen, make sure you have some sort of a background check put in place. This seems like a kindly, eccentric, honest enough person. But, who knows when the next weirdo tries to trap you in their dungeon, or something? Just be careful, is all. I'm sure you are. Thanks again.
