Debt Free Family of 5 – build 1000 sq ft Home NO Mortgage | Latigo Life

Meet the Latigo family – Rachel, Jared and their three kids. They sold more than half the stuff they owned, as well as their house, and converted a metal building into a much smaller home on Rachel’s parents land. Building the house themselves made it possible to design it specifically to their needs.
In this interview, Jared and Rachel talk about getting debt free and show us around their house, where a lot of their rooms have custom build items. They also share about how much happier and stress free they have become since downsizing their life. Getting out of debt made it possible for Rachel to quit her job and become a stay at home mom, and she’s able to homeschooling the kids and they are all able to spend much more time together as a family 🙂

my home is only 956 sq ft and I do not concider it to be small at all. It is a 1920's home and I love it, should be much more organized such as this one but hey, 4 kids are growung and making memories in it❤ I think the U.S. society needs to re think about the square footage of their homes… a family of four does NOT need to have so much wasted space in it. I think the more space the more the family unit pulls apart, just my opinion. Love all the Ikea gadgets too❤

I grew up in a 1000 square foot house it was 3 bedrooms 1 bath and were a family of 5 like most of the houses in our neighborhood so it was pretty common but I wish we had the vision to use the space creatively i still own the place and am going to use a lot of these ideas would love to go back to no mortgage and move my family of 3 there but unfortunately my wife isn't about that cleaning and organizing life can even share a bathroom with her which sucks because I saved so much money by not having a mortgage.

I don't understand home schooling. Why would you keep your kids from meeting new kids and learning social skills for there adult life. I just don't get it I guess. Also what about the kids when they grow up are you going to force them to stay in the same rooms while they go through puberty. It seems very selfish on the parents part. But this is me just looking in from the outside.

I like how you think this is small. Jesus christ, here in London we have our dining table in the kitchen, we do laundry in the kitchen, we don't have a play room, and the rooms are just big enough so that you can get through. We also have the toilet, bath, and sink in the same room.

Congratulations! We follow Dave Ramsey too, we did our debt free scream 2.5 years ago. We had the house and everything paid for,but we built a 30 x 40 with a 550 sq ft living quarters we call it our shop/shack. Our old house will close on December 20th and we'll be debt free again. I'm so excited. It's a better feeling not having to sweat about bills every month.

Great job! They made sacrifices for a better future. I'm probably sure that is why they made those sacrifices to begin with…to provide a better quality of living for their family. What an accomplishment.

I have one question, what do you want to do when your kids get older, I guess then they do not want to sleep with you in a room. Have you already made plans what to do then?

Such an inspiration we had to move out of our apartment due to Hurricane Harvey and currently living with my parents. Moving was such a nightmare I just realized how much stuff we have ! We're now exploring the option of buying or building a small house . We don't want a big mortgage and a big mess . I live the functionality of each space in your house !

The average home in the 1950’s was just under 1,000 sq feet. McMansions or material possessions won’t make you happy.
