Paris microflat gets precise in space use with thrifty ideas

On a nurse’s salary, Flore Devaux knew buying a home in Paris would be difficult so when she stumbled upon a tiny flat near Montmartre within her price range, she was thrilled by every centimeter of the 18.76 square meters place (201.9 square feet).

Armed with a drill kit and plenty of recycled materials, Flore- and her boyfriend Florian Moulin- built out plenty of storage space and custom furniture to make the space work for her: old wood boxes became book shelves; a drawer salvaged from the curb became under-the-bed storage; wheels added to an old steam trunk created a mobile coffee table with storage.

Inspired by the efficiency of boats (and her marine father), Flore, and Florian, created a storage bench to provide seating for 4 to 5 guests and lots of storage.

The kitchen is small, but large enough for an under-the-counter refrigerator (no freezer), compact washing machine (two drying racks can be set up in the bathroom), and a toaster oven (supported by the base of a hacked IKEA drying rack).

Love this! but the toilet across the hall, I wasn't crazy about. LOL especially with the locks….middle of the night fumbling for keys to use it.

Very efficient use of the space, and creative storage. But I'm just curious – what does one do if unfortunate enough to get a really loud/inconsiderate or otherwise intolerable neighbor that is so very close? I told myself that I would NEVER live in shared or conjoined space [apt/condo etc] after such terrible experienced decades ago. But then, having bought the only affordable detached available house where I was transferred by my employer in 1978, I found that it only took one horrible neighbor to make life miserable, and selling-moving-repurchasing was not only very expensive, but impossible.

Landlords/managers did nothing to stop or remove the obnoxious renters [breaking every rule in the contract], and reporting to police about their law-breaking, illegal activities only garnered serious retaliation.

Nearly 39 years since buying this house, intended as a 'starter house', there have been very brief periods of pleasant, cooperative, respectful fellow homeowners, but not for long. The neighborhood has deteriorated continuously and police turn their heads the other way over crime and other law-breaking. I am stuck here, in every possible way and category.

Other than move, what do others do when they are surrounded by very impossible, even dangerous, neighbors?

How quaint and sweet, this little living space in Paris, and with that lovely courtyard with the trees and two big picture windows that look out and let in plenty of light. Sweet and thoughtful boyfriend to help her make little things for their little place. Thank you for making this wonderful video French couple! I really liked this. Merci!

I live in a studio flat too, so I get inspiration from watching studio flat tours. This one is lovely and the kitchen is amazing. It is so chic, I would love to live there, I like the space outside and how the flat is part of the larger outside space.

Love the large windows ( I' d put in some window bars- is there no crime in France) the courtyard and the layout of the tiny, tiny, apartment. Hate having to go to the bathroom outside of the apartment ( almost like using a out house). Where's the shower or bathtub?

A multi functional wall bed would be a perfect addition to the space, where when up its a sofa for daytime seating and when it's down at night its the bed. I personally wouldn't want so many people sitting on my bed as a sofa with their street clothes on.

These pull up to the ceiling gizmos the British have used for eons for hanging things are so great. There is a modern one made by Lofti but according to reviews there seem to be issues stabilizing it. Unless it has been updated to fix that issue. The British style uses wrought iron for stabilizing weight.

I'm loving all the window decor she has in her home. I'm trying to put more in my home so that the natural light from the windows bounces off and into the living room. That way I can use less electricity for lights.

I like how her boyfriend puts it. We should not be attached to material things, that's why I love these tiny homes because it really forces people to live with only the essentials.

I could happily live there. It's already lovely, but if the electrical permits I would add a small stove and small dishwasher and change the washer to a washer/dryer in one. After that I'd freshen up the colours and design. It could be stunning.
