Simplify your Life – What is Downsizing? Mindset, Choices & Dreams

I wanted to talk to you guys a bit about what downsizing means to me, and what misconceptions people sometimes have about it. To me, downsizing is mainly about making conscious choices about the things I want and don’t want in my life. You don’t have to be a minimalist to do downsizing, and you don’t have to not own anything – downsizing is mostly about prioritizing what is important to you. Me and Morten really want to be able to travel a lot, so thats a priority for us, but for other people this might be different. So check out the video to hear my thoughts on the subject 🙂

I would definitely say that (for me) simplification or simplifying is about bringing the "things" most important to the forefront. For me …that is family and time with family, esp my children. Working to maintain/clean a larger house or own newer cars does not allow for more time with my family. I do have to work to feed, cloth and house my family but on a smaller scale by choice. I would honestly cut even more "stuff" out if my hubby were more "on board".

Love what you said. I'm a 60 year old single woman in the U S. I have started the process of simplifying by getting rid of excess stuff in order to downsize to a much smaller but not tiny house. As I am close to retiring I want to be able to travel and not spend my time cleaning a big house or doing yard work or my money on upkeep.

love your thoughts! For us it's about choosing our living space wisely (we live currently in a co-op) and asking the question, "do we need it?" Which is an ongoing process!

Loved your thoughts! We are downsizing in our possessions, possibly our home, solely based on changing priorities. We want more time and energy to enjoy eating out, movies, massages, trips, etc. Simply put, luxurious daily living. Adding more things means maintenance, expense, and time to us. No deprivation or austerity here!!!

Very well said! For me downsizing means less stuff, less clutter, less space, less stress and therefore more time, more freedom, more money and more appreciation for the things and relationships in my live

Fantastic explanation. I have said before-but I wish my spouse would embrace these ideals. I feel suffocated by things, ruled by debt, and controlled by the constant obligations to conform/buy/own. FRUSTRATED!

the only 'right' way to do this is your (my) way … self-defined. Great thoughts!

I have reached a point in my life in which "things" have become an anchor. Downsizing would be so freeing to me. I purchased a 3 bedroom 2 bath house 17 years ago and I am an older single woman. It is a huge draw on my time and energy to upkeep this large space. That doesn't include taking care of all the possessions that I have in it. I want to get rid of all this stress and weight, but, truthfully, don't know where to start. It can be very daunting. Maria, you are an inspiration to me. I will conquer this mountain. Hahhaha

Downsizing means finding out about values and priorities. Letting stuff, people, memories and thoughts go which have no or less value for me ♥ Living a simple life.

I appreciate this video as it explains in a broader sense by way of life. thank u. I own a modest apt in an affordable area that allows be to travel as I choose while having a normal  9 to 5 career. I do not seek to travel all the time but I can. I do as I wish by  minimizing abundant spending but I am in no way struggling or sacrifing just choosing what I value. keep the videos up I enjoy them 🙂

I feel everything you said. I think we get into buying habits and don't question it. Every area of my life has been affected by minimalism and thinking through what do I really need. I am discovering what I actually value and there is a lot of happiness in that.

I have a pretty similar attitude towards downsizing. Because I have some chronic health issues, and sometimes don't have a lot of physical or mental energy, I think about how much attention and time something requires from me, in addition to the money and space required. I try to reduce my things and activities so I'm not overwhelmed, and focus my attention on the things that bring me the most joy, satisfaction and/or income. Clear out the activities and stuff that aren't so rewarding to make room for things that are better value for my life.

Choices. It takes a lot of work to change a lifestyle but, so good to unload so many anchors that hold me back. When and if, I sell this house, I will need to keep things simple. There is no equity but I have a decent income, as I see it. Still, it's a hard choice. I do know it's the way to go, but still scary. Too much maintenance and, it will get worse as time goes by. I need some freedom from caretaking a home, and things. Thanks for your helpful thoughts on the subject.

I love your idea's, I can really relate. I Love a simple care free and peaceful life. With time for happiness and less need to work so hard. I Love the time to travel. I love having chickens and growing some of our food, I love going off the grid a little. Although I will be living in a 3 bedroom home in a few months, It is not a big home. It's just the size we need. See I love my space being clean and free of extra things. I love the feeling of not having a huge space, I love space saving ideas. I also love only having things I love and use all the time. So for me this means having a space for the things I do need and use, and giving away or donating the things I don't. Some people feel we have very little and our place, it is always clean, but I feel it's just because we don't have all the extras. I like it that way, I love how the energy of this feels. I can also free up my time and space for the things i feel are important to me. 🙂 Thank you for giving us a space to share with you 🙂 Love Kat <3
