This Is What Happens When You Drink a Coffee on an Empty Stomach

You might think drinking coffee in the morning is a great idea. You may even think it’s a great way to get yourself going in the morning.

But you’d be surprised to learn that drinking coffee first thing in the morning- especially on an empty stomach- is a terrible idea.

Why? Let’s take a look at a few reasons.

1. Stomach Acid

Your stomach has hydrochloric acid, which, at the right level, helps your body digest food properly. When your stomach is empty, this acid doesn’t have much to work with, so it can slosh around and hurt your stomach.

Drinking a cup of coffee on that empty stomach adds to the problem by putting more acid in your body.

Always having too much stomach acid will harm your stomach and digestive tract, leading to problems like heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, and stomach ulcers.

2. Bad Digestion

Having caffeine on an empty stomach ruins digestion, leading to a bloated feeling and other signs of irritable bowel syndrome, like pain and irregularity. How?

Caffeine acts like your adrenal glands, which create stress hormones called cortisol and adrenaline.

When these hormones flood your body, they raise your heart rate and blood pressure, and your liver starts letting out blood sugar to give energy to muscles so that you can run away.

Your digestive system also shuts down to send energy to where it is needed most.

3. Anxiety

When you go through your morning on an empty stomach, you lower your brain’s power to properly break down serotonin.

Serotonin is the “happy, calm hormone”. When your brain is unable to break down this hormone properly, it causes anxiety and depression.

Throwing a cup of coffee on top of that empty stomach causes anxiety by boosting your body’s cortisol and adrenaline levels.

That will leave you feeling shaky, nervous, and weak.

4. Dehydration

Drinking coffee on empty stomach raises the amount of fluid that your body passes, and can cause dehydration.

If you’re like most people, you’ll likely answer to that dehydration by reaching for yet another cup of coffee, making things even worse for yourself.

5. Low Levels of Serotonin

Very few people know about this, but coffee will make you feel less hungry.

People who drink coffee right away in the morning sometimes end up skipping breakfast.

Skipping your first meal of the day can ruin your body’s power to make serotonin, a neurotransmitter in charge of making you feel happy and calm.

Also, serotonin is very important for a good night’s sleep.

Your body changes serotonin into melatonin at night.

Low levels of melatonin usually lead to insomnia problems.

If you like drinking coffee, make sure to always have it after breakfast.

Odd, I would consider coffee suppressing appetite would be a plus for those of us trying to loose weight. Coffee also acts like a laxative, helping digestion.

I never drink coffee and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to drink 8 cups in a 2 hour window while fasting. Needless to say I am currently suffering terribly from stomach cramps, pain, and nausea. Stay in school kids, say no to coffee. In all seriousness I had no idea coffee could mess me up like this.

I'm drinking coffee on an empty stomach then I read the title of the video, "Oh shit"

I have some problems with this video. First of all, it claims that coffee adds acid to the stomach. Yet, it also claims this is bad, even though it claims that stomach acid is REDUCED. This doesn't make any sense whatsoever because the amount of stomach acid reduced is much more than the amount of coffee acid added (this fact is supported by research and statistics).Secondly, coffee actually has been proven to help with digestion. Anything with water in it, except for maybe beer and wine, will help digestion. This is common sense and is also supported by facts. Not only this- your digestion system does not shut down. If this was the case, you would die.Thirdly, coffee is known for many people to decrease anxiety and calm people down. It also can boost one's mood and increase their energy, and can even improve exercise performance, unlike what the video said of coffee causing weakness. It can of course happen if one drinks too much coffee since coffee can raise one's pulse, but if drunk in moderation, even without food, coffee can increase energy and make one happier and calmer. And this can actually be even more true without food sometimes, because food sometimes can temporarily make someone actually MORE tired due to things like carbohydrates and tryptophan in things like bread, stuffing, and turkey. Fourth, coffee does increase fluids moving through your body. Not only DOES this increase digestion- since water is found in coffee anyway, this makes up for that simple fact.Fifth, coffee can make people feel more hungry, over time actually increasing your body's metabolism. When you are more hungry, you actually have more energy, and thus have a higher, more efficient, and faster metabolism. Sixth, people who have coffee and skip breakfast having a bad mood is a horrible point anyway, and this has absolutely nothing to do with the coffee itself. People should have breakfast in the morning ANYWAY no matter what they do or don't drink.Seventh, insomnia is a horrible point to mention because this only happens if one drinks it close to bedtime in almost EVERY case. Sure, there are exceptions, but even too much food before bed can cause insomnia. Too much of anything can cause insomnia. Finally, this video doesn't even cover the health benefits of drinking it in general. Additionally, there are always some food and nutrients throughout one's body, or else you would be starving. Thus, coffee being bad to drink on an empty stomach is a myth and a flawed point.

1 year ago? omg — this definitely I can relate to — I love the taste and aroma of the coffee and unfortunately, tea doesn't appeal to me because it tastes like dish water. I think I'll perk some coffee just for the smell of it. mmmm

Great video and it explains my symptoms. Constipation, depression, anxiety, ibs, chronic fatigue. I've tried to give up coffee but the side effects crippled me. Even drinking green tea constipates me. Decaf coffee is so boring. Can you recommend a substitute?

all the idiots saying "I DO THAT AND HAVE NO PROBVLEMS" are laughable. most people have problems, some don't – people have different genetics and pasts, so these facts don#t apply to EVERYBODY, of course. just like some people can be smoking their whole lives, get old and die from something else and some people die in their 40s from lung cancer or so after smoking. idiots.

I have been drinking coffee on an empty stomach for 30 plus years and I don't have any of these issues. Not a one !  I sleep like a baby every night, I am a happy and calm person and my digestion is just fine.  Just find it hard to believe there is much truth to this video but I guess everyone is different.
