La Jettee by Chris Marker. A French film beautifully made in FilmRomans style; the original inspiration for the 12 Monkeys film. Fabulous fillum.

Most of these are crap movies (especially A Boy And His Dog — I turned it off after about 20 minutes. I'm a patient man, but this was just too much, and NOT funny, though it tried awfully hard to be). Naked Lunch is pretentious garbage. However, Forbidden Planet is very pretty, though it's got some joltingly inconsistent SFX that seem utterly out of place with other that are astonishingly beautiful, but the story itself is rather decent. Brazil is really cool. Soylent Green and West World are not bad for schlock, but Upstream Color is one of the best Science Fiction films ever, and of course Metropolis is just amazing to look at, especially considering how old it is. But of the ones that I haven't seen, Coherence looks the most interesting, with Time Crimes running a close 2nd.

    Good list.
I'm surprised Ebert found 'Brazil' "hard to follow".

Naked Lunch the book is like 1,000 times weirder and more graphic than the movie. Worth reading if you have a decent tolerance for sex and violence.

Dare I say it the first Matrix although borrows a lot from other movies. Contact I think is quite underrated. Primer is amazing. Some Anime should be on this list too I think Ghost In The Shell Anime also Akira and Evangelion Plus Cowboy bebop.

They live only gets an honorable mention? One of the greatest films, let alone Sci-Fi films of all time. It's influenced half the shit on the internet that isn't porn! People only know Jay Z is in the Illuminati because John Carpeneter told them he is 😉

Retroactive (1997) with Jim Belushi. One of my favourite Time-Jump-Groundhog-Day Films, as true as it is brutal.
A more romantic and nicer Time-Jump Film:
12:01 (1993), Jonathan Silverman, Helen Slater and the late and great Martin Landau (RIP). Does not really fit on this list, and is a TV-Movie (feels like Lifetime).

My family HATES "Westworld", but I actually kind of LIKE it, ESPECIALLY the Medieval scenes!

I NEED to see "A Boy and His Dog", 'cause it looks to be HILARIOUS in a way.

What? these are films people havn't seen? I must be considered a cineast, because I view Brazil and Forbitten planet a must see if you only see a handful of sci-fi films ever. And add Soylent green and Westworld in that list also – the latter in a cable remake right now. And Naked lunch is not SciFi.
For the 10 best less known list I'd pick Titan, Avalon, Silent running, Enemy mine, Doomsday, 13'th floor, Solaris (1972 version), District 9, Stalker, Ergo proxy.

Naked Lunch isn't a Sci-Fi film, but rather a psychedelic avant-garde film about addiction and writing.

Brazil is my favorite movie of all time. It isn't a bit "hard to follow" – except in the sense that it will be hard to top, and that hasn't happened yet.

Yeah, most of these are quality movies, but seriously, Omega Man, Metropolis, Forbidden Planet? These are the films that have hardly been ever seen?
I thought this list would be chockful of obscure sci-fi movies that are derserving of a bigger audience. Films more like The Man From Earth, Safety Not Guaranteed, Moon, Happy Accidents, and The Machine.

I can't believe you didn't mention that it's the same Naked Lunch as William S Burroughs' controversial modern classic best-seller. Some people consider it unreadable but it, of course is not and I think one of those books that you make your own and wouldn't have the same tone, no matter who wrote/directed the movie.
How much you know about Burroughs himself through his own writings and his appearance in other people's work such as 'Old Bull Lee' in Jack Kerouac's "On The Road" [Viggo Mortensen plays him brilliantly in that movie] and 'Bill Lee', 'Old Bull' or 'General Lee' [I think] in Allen Ginsberg's epic, maybe even more controversial, poem "Howl".

The spoiler for Soylent Green is in the trailer for the film. It constantly repeats "what is the secret of soylent green" then shows people being stuck in dump trucks and (obviously) human corpses wrapped up in bags in a factory on a conveyor belt with the product coming out of the same factory
