The series had four games, and two spiritual successors so it may be classified as too much of a success, but I'd consider Clock Tower to be a major cult classic. It's fanbase is small, but rabid.

Omikron: the Nomad Soul never sold well, but it has a special place in the hearts of a great many gamers. It was an early open world console game, with Bowie music, and an interesting cyberpunk aesthetic. It may not have succeeded at everything it set out to do, but it really experimented with many systems that have gone on to have great success later.

An interesting case of a cult classic series crossing over to the mainstream is the Persona series. Even with a substantial magazine ad campaign, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment was not a big seller. Revelations Persona was almost impossible to find. When I preordered Persona 3 the game shop I went to didn't even bother carrying it for the shelves. They only got the copies for me and one other person who preordered. It wasn't until the FES version came out that mainstream audiences were able to discover it. Now even Wal-Mart is selling 5.

How about games like Kings Bounty and Master of Magic. Games few people heard of but were ripped off by Heroes of Might and Magic and Age of Wonders.

I'm disappointed that Sweet Home for NES didn't become more of a cult classic. It's still great to play today and the game is just so unique.

Resident Evil and Final Fantasy VII are both cult classics. Both games are gettig remade over and over. I know these are best games of all time as well. But people enjoy it playing after 20 years.

Extermination PS2. It was also plagued by the technology of the time but serves as an amazing video game interpretation of The Thing.
