Transforming a tiny apartment for a growing family (kid #2)

Marta Barceló lives in a 47 square meter (505 sq ft) apartment in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. She first moved in with her husband. Then they had a son so they built him a bed under the stairs. Then they had a second son, so they put the living room on the roof, built a closet under the stairs and put their sons in bunkbeds in the old living room-turned-bedroom.

son bastante comodos para alguien sano y en completo uso de su cuerpo,¿pero para alguien con discapacidad son unas verdaderas carceles.

That is small for a family of that size here in America. My parents house built in the 50's was 1.000 sq ft. with 3 bedrooms and 1 Bathroom. For comparison, my house (built in 2001) is a total of 2600 sq ft with 2 baths and 3 bedrooms (unfinished basement). This is now average here. Its WAY too big. I will never use the basement. we live comfortably in the upstairs area which is 1300 sq. ft. Im looking at downsizing.

in some way, it is actually good. They can't hide and thus, all problem must be settled. It works for my siblings and I.

I totally agree with you AND kirstendirksen, but you have to keep in mind that living with (FOR EXAMPLE) 3 friends is much easier and takes much less space than living with 3 children.

This house is filled with love and fun and not useless space and material things. Its bright and full of light. I am always struck by how on HGTV(American home and garden tv) the families need 3000 sq ft because they have had 1 or two children and the space is "too small". I get the feeling that those HGTV families are trying to get away from their kids. I guess eventually all the family members will sit in their individual rooms eating dinner and playing on the internet.

60sq m (650sq ft) flat (3 rooms, kitchen, bathroom, entryway) is nice for a family of 4. It can be comfortable as long as there are separate rooms and someone has modular furniture or cabinetry to keep things. In many US cities it's difficult to find a 1300 sq ft condo or a house with 3 bedrooms + Living/dining area, yet a condo this size is likely to have 2 full bathrooms. The architecture in the US and small furniture with large footprint make it more difficult.

What Martha says at 6:30 to 6:50 just proves how smart she is. I think I'll start bunking my kids together the older they get older. 😉

This feels like the woman in the shoebox house with many kids. I am getting claustrophobic. Plus I skipped the part where I get to see her bedroom. This video leaves me yearning for grown up space- not kid infested areas.

I would make the tv room the master bedroom, give the kids the parents room and open up the floor plan downstairs to have a real living/dinning area. or if they want the kids on the same level, put the bedrooms upstairs make the master bedroom smaller as a guest/3rd bedroom and open up the 1st level a little more, the babies are so cute 🙂

I would've put the master bedroom upstairs, kids in the bedroom on the main, and made the living room into an actual living room with the sofas.

love this place. really creative use of space. bet a ton of people just move rather than find a better way to utilise the space they have.

really impressed by how much her English has improved too. she's an incredible woman.

I'm so jealous! I'd be ecstatic if I had a house that big! I love how they've maximized all that space. My house has no bathroom or kitchen.

I like the way your organize everything in a small space. The idea of having convertible furnitures are very practical. The idea is very helpful for me specially if you have a limited space. Thank you in sharing.

I wish there were more videos like this out there. Families living in small spaces, in the city, without the funds for an architect to customize everything perfectly. It's refreshing.

This is becoming my fave new genre – couples with minimalist apartments or tiny houses, who soon have to radically change their living style when a baby comes on the scene.
