Why America’s Test Kitchen Calls the ROK the Best Manual Espresso Maker

Buy our winner on Amazon:

If you drink espresso and think your only options for getting it are expensive coffee shops or investing in yet another pricey electric countertop device, consider this sleek hand-powered model. The ROK Manual Espresso Maker impressed our tastings and testings team with an attractive, simple design that quickly and easily produced a rich, full-bodied espresso (no plug or pods required). Now you can have espresso anytime you want (and for less money and space than those other options will cost you).

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Attractive and functional, this machine produced rich, flavorful espresso and velvety crema with the pressing down of two levers. It was easy and intuitive; after just a few uses, we’d mastered great espresso.

America’s Test Kitchen is the most-watched cooking show on public television—up to 2 million viewers watch each episode. The show is filmed in the test kitchen of Cook’s Illustrated magazine, located just outside Boston.

Each episode features recipes we’ve carefully developed to make sure they work every time. The test cooks solve everyday cooking problems, test equipment so you never have to waste money on things that don’t work, and taste supermarket ingredients to save you time in the store. It’s a common-sense, practical approach you won’t find on other cooking shows.

I would not consider the Aeropress to be an espresso maker. A cheaper option for espresso is the Staresso. You can see what it looks like on my latest video. It costs about $50.

Ugh, I hate it when people who may cook well also think they automatically know a good cup of espresso (which I think is whats happening here). I mean, take a look at the “espresso” at the end!

I'm still skeptical. I'd like to see this compared to a Rancilio Silvia, with a good burr grinder being used for the tests.

The best way to make milk foam is to boil it. that's kind of where the idea comes from

Electric espresso machine does not take up hardly any more space then a coffee maker, nor is it thousands or even hundreds of dollars. This sounds like an overhype to sell this manual device. I have an electric espresso machine that even makes foam that only cost 50 and works great. And, it's no bigger then a coffee maker.

It's very disappointing to see what the new management/leadership at ATC has done. What was formerly information beyond reproach is now just used to hawk wares sold by the ATC store.

I've got one, it makes good espresso. It'll never be as good as a $1000 machine, but for manual, it's the best. Plus it's a gorgeous machine, well engineered.

i have all these devices and i have to agree Rok is pretty good. My friend took the Rok espresso on camping trips in Utah and AirBNB places, and we all have to agree it is the best manual espresso. He is a barista in one of the big coffee companies in SF and its just a very therapeutic process when making manual espresso. Thats just my two cents an i do not have any controlling interest of Rok Espresso.

The link shows a review from 2008. Geez. You can't hide behind your not influenced by money spiel much longer. If the review is not current, there must certainly be new products out that you've not tested. The methods of testing and product description read like a commercial. This is why you are getting so much hate. We know what the score is.

I've unsubscribed and cancelled my americastestkitchen.com account today. It's obvious that ATK is no longer objective in their equipment reviews. The equipment reviews were 50% of why I had the account and subscribed to ATK. If ATK is on the take from equipment manufacturers then they are probably on the take from food product producers and that means I'm no longer interested in recipes either.

There are several manual espresso makers that are far better than this one. They did not talk about the amount of pressure this device can produce. How many pounds of pressure on the levers will produce the 9 bars of water pressure that defines an espresso. This obvious omission tells me that this device cannot produce the amount of pressure needed. The only other device they talked about is the Aeropress which in no way is, or even claims to be an espresso maker. Another sneaky trick to imply that they actually tested this device against a competitive device.

    ATK you've lost your way.

Could someone recommend some culinary arts books to me? I don't want "cooking for dummies." I want to learn about advanced techniques, foundation ingredients (ex. plain bechamel) and how to appropriately improvise with them, what kind of flavors and seasonings are complementary, how to create a dish within a cultural context, how to combine elements from multiple cultures, and more. They don't all have to be in the same book. Thank you so much!

Hannah, you do an excellent job, but if I may be so bold, you should find it to your advantage to engage a professional speech coach to rid yourself of the croaking you always add to the ends of passages. This is a relatively straightforward fix that will result in a crystal clear delivery from start to finish of every passage you speak.

This is not America's Test Kitchen, this is bullshit. 'A moka pot doesn't work very well' …work well for making coffee? Millions of people use those things. They mentioned crema, but then when they showed the shot they make with their ROK, there was no crema.
